Trump declares economic war to Colombia

Trump Orders 25% Tariffs on Colombia in Retaliation for Rejecting Two Deportation Flights

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered on Sunday to impose a 25% tariff on all Colombian products after his counterpart in the South American country, Gustavo Petro, refused in recent hours to accept two flights with deported nationals from the U.S.

“Petro’s refusal of these flights has jeopardized the national and public safety of the United States (…) In a week, the 25% tariffs will rise to 50%,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social network, where he also announced other “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures” against Colombia.

The new Trump Administration indicated on Friday that they had “begun” the deportations of undocumented migrants to their countries of origin, but Petro has rejected the transfer of these individuals to Colombia, considering that they were not receiving “dignified” treatment.

Previously, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that The president assured that he had “return US military aircraft coming with Colombian migrants”.

“A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves,” he insisted, adding that he cannot make migrants (stay) in a country that does not want them, but if that country returns them it must be with dignity and respect for them and Colombia.

For that reason, the president requested that these people be sent “in civilian aircraft, without treating criminals,” because “Colombia must be respected.”

In addition, Petro stated this Sunday that there are 15,660 Americans residing “irregularly” in the country and invited them to come forward to “regularize their situation.”

“There are 15,660 Americans residing in Colombia irregularly. They should approach our immigration service to regularize their situation,” the leader expressed on the social media platform X.
