The rapid decline of Germany’s delusional Authoritarian Liberals

Along with the United States there is no nation that so fanatically supports Israel’s genocide in Palestine or the war against Russia in Ukraine. The United States and Germany are the main providers of military supplies to Israel and Ukraine, where Germany’s legacy political parties are irrevocably invested in its corrupt, fascist government, and a war that cannot be won, but could well be lost. This and its neo-liberal dogma are resulting in a rapid decline in the support of Germany’s authoritarian liberal political class.
On 24 June this year Germany’s Foreign Minister and creator of “Feminist Foreign Policy”, Annalena “Butcher” Baerbock, held a speech in Tel Aviv in which she declared:
“Israel’s greatest strength and its best defence is its humanity, its commitment to democratic values, international law and human rights. Over the last nine months, it has been the incredible resilience and humanity of the people of Israel that has impressed me so much.”
This delusional assertion was made a full six months after the International Court of Justice declared that there is a plausible case that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians (Germany is the only nation supporting Israel’s case against this decision) and less than a month before the same ICJ declared that Israel’s 57-year occupation and settlement of the West Bank and East Jerusalem are unlawful, that both must end, that settlements must be evacuated, and that Palestinians, denied their inalienable right to self-determination, must be compensated for their losses, and allowed to return to their lands.
This week we have learned that Germany has submitted an amicus curiae observation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) Pre-Trial Chamber to prevent the Prosecutor’s application for arrest warrants for Israeli officials for warcrimes: After the United Kingdom withdrew its objection on 26 July, Germany is the only nation “trying to get Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defence Minister Gallant off the hook of the ICC.”, wrote the professor for international law Stefan Talmon on Twitter The German government’s spiralling fanaticism continues unabated.
Butcher Baerbock is in no way an anomaly in Germany. On 19 July – the same day as the ICJ’s damning decision on Israel’s occupation and apartheid – prominent members of Germany’s metropolitan managerial elite sent an open letter to the German government:
“We are outraged that the situation of gays, lesbians and transgender people has been completely overlooked in the public debate about the war triggered by Hamas. The situation for gays, lesbians and transgender people in Palestine is depressing.
Israel, on the other hand, is a protective power, centre of attraction and place of refuge for gays, lesbians and transgender people, also and especially from Palestine, even if this is made even more difficult by the war. The opportunity to live openly and self-determinedly in Israel is unique in the entire region. Hamas’ hatred of Israel is also directed against this diversity and therefore directly against us. That is why we believe that any toleration of Hamas and any relativisation of the human rights violations in Gaza and the West Bank have no place in our community.”
No mention of Israeli war crimes. No mention of 40,000 confirmed civilian Palestinian deaths (180,000 according to the renowned medical journal The Lancet). No mention of the ICJ or ICC decisions. These are the “good Germans” whose virtue signalling the world’s liberals have been gushing about for decades – now allied with the Nazi Zionist regime in Israel in committing genocide.
As one academic on twitter, @NewLeftEViews, recently observed,
“The content of German state iedology isn’t the main concern; the public seems overwhelmingly at odds with it anyway. What is more concerning is the uniformity, cynicism, and absolute ruthlessness with which the intellectual elites and media classes have seen fit to enforce it.”
As Germany becomes increasingly bogged down politically and financially in both wars and at the same time Germany’s economy declines, the authoritarian liberals are rapidly losing their political legitimacy. The recent EU parliamentary elections demonstrated this. All the mainstream parties – Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Liberals (FDP), and Greens (this most fanatical party and representative of German middle class fascism lost half its votes) – together obtained only round 60 percent of the votes. When you consider the fact that just 50% of German citizens voted, not only does that mean that only one third of Germans voted for these mainstream parties, but that there were close to twice as many non-voters as supporters of these legacy authoritarian liberal parties. One third of the electorate is not a mandate nor representative of a nation.
The current pro-genocide government coalition of Social Democrats, Greens, FDP is only polling slightly better than the two non-legacy parties, the far-right AfD and the newly formed BSW, which supports an end to the war in Ukraine, Israel’s genocide, and the return to social democratic economic policies.
Worse is coming. In September there will be elections in three states in the Eastern part of the Germany. Here the pro-genocide authoritarian liberals are especially discredited. It is conceivable that the AfD and BSW will be the two strongest parties in two of these states. It is also well possible that the legacy parties together will not receive half the seats up for election in all three states, the Liberals (FDP) and Greens probably receiving none; the Social Democrats could share the same fate in two states. In other words, the decay of authoritarian liberalism is gaining momentum as is the panic of this political elite.
The hysteria of the mainstream parties is becoming palpable. On 16 July the Social Democrat Interior Minister closed down a far-right magazine called “Compact”. This is a serious interference with freedom of the press, regardless of what you think about the magazine, and sets a dangerous precedent. The government knew this and used a legal trick to get around laws protecting the freedom of the press. The arbitrary interpretation of laws is a practice we are increasingly witnessing not only in Germany, but among the political class in Europe and especially in the EU itself as a tool for self-preservation of the authoritarian liberal political elite. This is the “rule based order” that has been the basis of Western dominance abroad and at and repression at home by cancelling the rule of law.
Some members of the mainstream political parties, especially the Greens, are calling for a ban of the AfD. The decision by the current government (Social Democrats, Greens, and Liberals) in banning a medium is a first step in this direction, With all three parties steering toward political oblivion, fanaticism and desperation are on the rise. That would however mean banning the second strongest party in Germany, which would be nothing less than a putsch, but as we know so well from history, fanatical Germans know no limits. The September election could catalyse this panic further.
From all sides Germany’s authoritarian liberal political class is under pressure. Its reckless disregard of reality led it into delusional policies based upon bourgeois morals, having nothing to do with realist politics. As in the rest of the EU its leadership consists of painfully inadequate human beings. Its support of genocidal Israel is becoming increasingly untenable requiring a perverse discourse and increasing repression of protest. Its support of Ukraine is equally degenerating as news from the front becomes ever more bleak. If Donald Trump wins the American presidency, this will put them at the mercy of a man who does not like them. At the same time the German economy continues to falter. Last but not least its support in the German population is seeping away and its political dominance disappearing.
