Maduro: We are a sovereign country

President Maduro responds to Lula and Petro’s call for redo election: “We are a sovereign country”

Aug 16, 2024

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro told media outlets on the evening of August 15 that he rejects calls for redo elections by his counterparts in Brazil and Colombia. He declared that “Venezuela has the sovereignty of an independent country with a Constitution, it has institutions, and the conflicts in Venezuela of any kind are solved among Venezuelans, with their institutions, with their law and with their Constitution.”

His statements came hours after the heads of state had declared through different channels that the “solution” to the problems facing Venezuela following its presidential election on July 28 would be to create a government of “cohabitation” with the right-wing or to hold redo elections.

Their statements were a sharp contrast to their earlier position wherein they called for respect to Venezuela’s sovereignty and democratic processes, and to wait for the decision of its competent institutions.

On the same day, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in his morning press conference that he rejected calls for redo elections, “Let’s see what the court decides. I do not think it is prudent for us from the outside, a foreign government, whoever it may be, to give our opinion on something that should be resolved by Venezuelans.”

ALBA Movements: Neither cohabitation nor transition! Venezuela has decided!

Aug 16, 2024

On Friday, ALBA Movements, an organization bringing together grassroots movements from 25 countries in the Americas, issued a statement rejecting the claims made by the presidents of Colombia and Brazil, who proposed the formation of a cohabitation government in Venezuela, where President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected in the July 28 elections.

Below is the statement from ALBA Movements:

Respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples is a principle that any revolutionary project should prioritize. It must make that principle a political banner in international relations, even in the face of conservative foreign pressure that always seeks to undermine it.

The social and popular movements that know, love, and defend the Bolivarian people reject, as unusual and untimely, the slightest idea or suggestion, such as that proposed by some ‘progressive’ sectors in the region, of developing diplomatic, political, military, or any other type of interventions in Venezuela, which are aimed at effectively disregarding the results of a concluded electoral process.

National Lawyers Guild Report: Election Monitoring Delegation to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

Jul 29, 2024

The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) sent five election observers to monitor the presidential elections in Venezuela that took place on July 28, 2024. Guild members collectively visited a number of polling centers on the day of the election, where they observed thousands of voters participate. The delegation witnessed no instances of fraud or serious irregularities, and found overall voter satisfaction with the electoral process. We observed a deeply participatory and pluralistic process where the Venezuelan people are directly engaged in the social and political life of their nation.

The official election results were announced shortly after 12 am on July 29. President Nicolas Maduro has been re-elected with a 51.2 percent share of the vote. His leading challenger, Edmundo González, took 44.2 percent of the vote. Voter turnout was approximately 59 percent of a voting electorate of over 21.3 million people. Opposition violence ensued at multiple polling stations across the country before the closure of the polls, functioning to effectively block the final count. Following his announcement of the election results, Elvis Amoroso, president of the electoral commission, called upon the attorney general to investigate the attacks on the electoral transmission system and the polls. Despite the soundness of the electoral process, the US-backed opposition and US mainstream media refuse to accept the results, aiming once again to threaten Venezuela’s democracy and sovereignty.

People’s movements across the world launch campaign of solidarity with Venezuela

Aug 20, 2024

On August 9, the ALBA Movimientos, a platform of social and political movements from across the Americas and the Caribbean, the International Peoples’ Assembly, the Simon Bolivar Institute, and the Assembly of Caribbean Peoples, launched a campaign titled: “For Democracy and Sovereignty: Hands Off Venezuela!” The campaign comes in the aftermath of Venezuela’s presidential election and a wave of seemingly coordinated attacks from right-wing political actors, mainstream media, and US and its allies.

The launch document states that, for several months, a media campaign has been created to question the legitimacy of the elections in the Caribbean country. “From the hegemonic media, with political and diplomatic strategies, it has been sought to install an idea of the illegitimacy of the recent Venezuelan electoral process,” states the communiqué.

The joint statement affirms that the campaign mentioned above against the legitimacy of the Venezuelan electoral process has been shaped from several communicational fronts: creating doubts about the technological capacity of the electoral machines, reinforcing the 930 economic sanctions against Venezuela, generating violence in the streets and illegally self-declaring González Urrutia as president of the country, among others.
