Ankara is not reading correctly the situation. A catastrophic war for both Greece and Turkey may be the result

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s adviser, Mesut Hakki, has directly threatened Greece with war if it reacts and protects its continental shelf if Ankara sends a research ship south of Crete.

“Turkey will consider any attack by Greece on a research ship in the Mediterranean as the cause of wars and Israel will pay a very heavy price if it attacks Turkish ships.”

Mesut Hakkı Caşın is a member of President Erdo καιan’s Security and Foreign Policy Council and therefore it has an institutional role in shaping Turkish foreign policy.

He recently said that “a country of 8.5 million inhabitants cannot limit us to the sea” referring to Greece (which has a population of 11 million but apparently the Turkish adviser estimates the active population).

The Turks are the grandchildren of the Ottoman admiral Barbarossa who ruled the Mediterranean. Ancient Ottoman law required the ship to pay tolls to cross (the Gibraltar from the straits). In the not-so-distant past and I’m talking about 1830, America had to pay the Turkish Navy to cross the Gibraltar. Now Greece, with a population of 8.5 million, dares to limit us to the sea.
