The scenes in Brasilia looked eerily similar to events at the US Capitol on 6 January two years ago – and there are deeper connections as well.
“The whole thing smells,” said a guest on Steve Bannon’s podcast, one day after the first round of voting in the Brazilian election in October last year.
The race was heading towards a run-off and the final result was not even close to being known. Yet Mr Bannon, as he had been doing for weeks, spread baseless rumours about election fraud.
Across several episodes of his podcast and in social media posts, he and his guests stoked up allegations of a “stolen election” and shadowy forces. He promoted the hashtag #BrazilianSpring, and continued to encourage opposition even after Mr Bolsonaro himself appeared to accept the results.

After months of stoking tensions in Brazil, Steve Bannon and other key figures involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot cheered on their counterparts in Brazil as supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Congress, presidential palace, and supreme court in a doomed attempt to usher him back into power. “Brazilian Freedom Fighters,” Bannon wrote Sunday on the right-wing social media site Gettr, shortly after the group broke past police barricades and began to ransack the government buildings. The one-time Trump adviser has been spreading debunked claims for months of a stolen election in Brazil—with eerie echoes of the 2020 election lies Bannon and others spread. Jan. 6 rally organizer Ali Alexander similarly lauded the attempted Brazilian insurrectionists, cheekily stating on former President Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform: “I do NOT denounce unannounced impromptu Capitol tours by the people.”

For the second time in three years, Steve Bannon has been linked to an incident of right-wing supporters of a president storming a congressional building while supporting false claims of voter fraud.
In scenes reminiscent of when followers of Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, supporters of far-right former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in the federal capital Brasilia on Sunday.
During the attempted coup, which took place a week after the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters draped in green and yellow—the colors of the national flag, adopted by the right-wing movement—ransacked the buildings while demanding the defeated former president be restored to power.

Bannon on Brazil riots: ‘I’m not backing off 1 inch’

The storming of the presidential palace and trashing of government buildings in the Brazilian capital by thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro sent shockwaves across the hemisphere.
But on Monday morning, one of the main U.S. voices encouraging Bolsonaro supporters to question the results of the country’s presidential election last year declined to tap the brakes.
“I’m not backing off one inch on this thing,” said former Trump adviser Steve Bannon in an interview. Earlier in the day, he repeated his claims of election fraud in Brazil and called on the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who beat Bolsonaro, to open up an investigation.
“Look at the report, the code, the tabulator, the machines and open them up … be transparent, let the citizens of Brazil see,” Bannon said on his “War Room” podcast.

RIO DE JANEIRO — While tens of thousands of supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro camp outside military facilities across Brazil to protest his election loss, members of Bolsonaro’s inner circle are meeting with advisers to former president Donald Trump to discuss next steps.
Brazilian congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, the president’s son, has visited Florida since the Oct. 30 vote, meeting Trump at Mar-a-Lago and strategizing with other political allies by phone. He spoke with former Trump strategist Stephen K. Bannon, who was in Arizona assisting the campaign of GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, about the power of the pro-Bolsonaro protests and potential challenges to the Brazilian election results, Bannon said. He lunched in South Florida with former Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller, now CEO of the social media company Gettr, and discussed online censorship and free speech, Miller said.

Trump Adviser Rips Into Stephen Miller: ‘He’s Waffen-SS’

Stephen Miller, the 32-year-old White House adviser, has ignited a political firestorm in the United States as the Trump administration’s immigration policy of separating migrant children from their parents and detentions in cages is putting pressure on the nation.
Miller himself is reportedly happy with how things are going, which led one fellow staffer to equate his behavior to that of the Nazi SS, Vanity Fair reported Wednesday.
“Stephen actually enjoys seeing those pictures at the border,” an outside White House adviser said. “He’s a twisted guy, the way he was raised and picked on. There’s always been a way he’s gone about this. He’s Waffen-SS.”
Both, Melania Trump and Laura Bush made the rare political move of speaking out against the policy – joining the UN human rights chief, who called it “unconscionable.” Even stalwart Trump supporters like Bill O’Reilly have admitted defeat on the issue, writing on Twitter, “The Trump administration will not win on this one and it should reverse course today.”
