Poll reveals Soviet Union’s most outstanding achievement according to Russians

The poll covered 1.6 thousand Russians over the age of 18

MOSCOW, December 30. /TASS/. The majority of Russians consider the launch of the first satellite and man’s flight into space to be the most outstanding achievements of the USSR, according to a survey by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) presented on Friday.

Friday, December 30, marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of the USSR.

“The rating of outstanding achievements of the USSR according to Russians is topped by the space program (the launch of the first satellite and the first manned flight into space), every other person (55%) says so. The top 5 also includes the victory in the Great Patriotic War (13%), industrial development (12%), scientific and technological developments, best scientists (10%) and nuclear weapons, nuclear energy (10%),” the study says.

According to the survey, more than half of Russians (51%) are convinced that life in the Soviet Union had more positive aspects than negative ones. Another 5% of respondents expressed the opposite opinion, and 38% of respondents believe that the good and the bad were equally divided.

The poll shows that 58% of Russians regret the collapse of the USSR, one in five answered that they do not regret it, and 13% of respondents noted that they do not care. The main reason why Russians regret the collapse of the USSR was the feeling of unity, cohesion, and friendship (26%).

The main argument of those who do not regret the collapse of the Soviet Union was economic reasons and the transition to a market system (16%). It also turned out that half of Russians (48%) would like the Soviet Union to be restored while another 37% said they do not want it. Most of the respondents (67%) think that in modern times the restoration of the USSR is impossible.

The all-Russian VTsIOM-Sputnik poll was conducted as part of a special project with RT on December 16. It covered 1.6 thousand Russians over the age of 18. The maximum margin of error, with a probability of 95%, doesn’t exceed 2.5%
