European Parliament: Turkey must immediately end illegal drilling activities and infringing on the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus

MEPs condemn Turkey’s activities in Varosha, Cyprus, and call for sanctions

Nov. 26,2020
Turkey’s decision to “open” the sealed-off suburb of Varosha undermines prospects of a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, warn MEPs.
In a resolution adopted by 631 votes in favour, 3 against and 59 abstentions, MEPs condemn Turkey’s illegal activities in the Varosha suburb of the city of Famagusta and warn that its partial “opening” weakens prospects of a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, exacerbating divisions and entrenching the permanent partition of the island.
MEPs call on Turkey to transfer Varosha to its lawful inhabitants under the temporary administration of the UN (in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 550 (1984)) and to refrain from any actions that alter the demographic balance on the island through a policy of illegal settlement.

France, EU lawmakers push for sanctions on Turkey next month

By Robin Emmott, John Irish
Nov. 26, 2020
The European Parliament urged the EU on Thursday to impose sanctions on Turkey after President Tayyip Erdogan this month paid a visit to the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north of Cyprus.
With 631 votes in favour, three against and 59 abstentions, the parliament agreed a non-binding resolution in support of EU member Cyprus urging EU leaders to “take action and impose tough sanctions in response to Turkey’s illegal actions”.
The resolution is likely to bolster support for France’s push for EU sanctions on Turkey next month, following through on a threat made by the bloc in October over a dispute between Ankara and EU members Greece and Cyprus over natural gas rights.

European Parliament votes in favor of sanctions against Turkey

November 26, 2020
For the first time, the European Parliament, by a large majority, voted in favor of the strict imposition of sanctions on Turkey, adopting the amendment tabled by the Greek and Cypriot Delegations, at the initiative of Vangelis Meimarakis, Lefteris Christoforou and Loukas Fourlas.
The result of the vote was 440 votes in favor, 193 against and 53 abstentions.
This is an important decision of the European Parliament, which sends a clear message to the EU leaders, who at the forthcoming Council on December 11 are expected to take decisions against the Turkish provocation.
This amendment, which was supported by the European People’s Party, proves that the voice of the Greek and Cypriot MEPs of the EPP is strong.
