Withdrawing from WHO

By Dimitris Konstantakopoulos

A significant decision made by President Trump involved the U.S. withdrawing from the World Health Organisation.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic the Organisation faced numerous assaults amid the climate of irrationality surrounding the “pro-“and “anti-vaccine” debate, reminding us all how much logic and seriousness have been disrupted in our time.

It is certainly possible that the WHO is significantly influenced by the large pharmaceutical multinationals, as are all international institutions, first and foremost Trump’s government of billionaires itself.

But salvation will certainly not come from the dissolution of every organisation of international cooperation, of the entire network that the political conditions created by the victory over Nazism in 1945 bequeathed to us.

The solution is the reform of these institutions in the most democratic and “multi-centered” way, not the destruction of the necessary international cooperation, much more so in a situation where, for the first time in human history, we are even facing the threat of the extinction of life on Earth, due to the productive forces and technologies we have acquired. On these issues, the “demolisher” Trump had nothing to say during his first term and apparently has nothing to say now. He is destroying a system many people do not like, but with what is to be replaced?
