Trump’s VP Pick Vance Says Iran Needs To Be ‘Punched Hard’

The Ohio senator also said he believes Trump will bring the Ukraine war to an end so the US can focus on China, which he labeled the ‘biggest threat’

July 16, 2024

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) took a hawkish tone toward Iran in an interview following the news that he had been selected as former President Trump’s running mate for the November election.

“The most important part of the Trump doctrine of foreign policy is you don’t commit America’s troops unless you really have to, but when you do, you punch and you punch hard,” Vance told Fox News’s Sean Hannity at the Republican National Convention on Monday.

“A lot of people recognize that we need to do something with Iran but not these weak little bombing runs,” Vance said, apparently referring to President Biden’s airstrikes against Shia militias in Iraq and Syria.

“If you’re going to punch the Iranians, you punch them hard, and that’s what [Trump] did when he took out Soleimani,” he said, referring to the 2020 assassination of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani.

JD Vance was once ‘never Trump’. Now he’s his running mate

“I’m a ‘never Trump’ guy. I never liked him.”

“My god what an idiot.”

“I find him reprehensible.”

That was from JD Vance in interviews and on Twitter in 2016, when the publication of his memoir Hillbilly Elegy catapulted him to fame.

In the same year, he wrote privately on Facebook to Josh McLaurin, his former law school roommate, now a state Senator in Georgia: “I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole… or that he’s America’s Hitler”.

‘To go from those texts… to being Trump’s biggest cheerleader, it’s just kind of unbelievable,” Mr McLaurin, who is a member of the Democratic Party, told BBC Newshour.

A few short years later, Mr Vance transformed himself into one of Trump’s steadfast allies.

JD Vance says allies get no ‘free rides’ for world peace if Trump wins

Vance is well-known for opposing the US military’s multibillion-dollar help to Ukraine and advocating for negotiations with Russia.

18 Jul 2024

Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said at the 2024 Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that a Trump presidency would not mean “free rides” for the US allies in sharing the burden of securing international peace.

Vance also added that the US will only wage wars when necessary.

On Wednesday, he said, “Together, we will make sure our allies share in the burden of securing world peace. No more free rides for nations that betray the generosity of the American taxpayer. Together, we will send our kids to war only when we must … When we punch, we’re going to punch hard.”

Vance is well-known for opposing the US military’s multibillion-dollar help to Ukraine and advocating for negotiations with Russia. Additionally, he exhorts the US government to focus on China’s competitors. In terms of domestic politics, he is in favor of strengthening immigration laws and outlawing abortion.

Billionaire-Backed JD Vance Postures as Working Class Ally in RNC Speech

“Vance doesn’t care about workers—he just wants to put more money into the pockets of greedy CEOs.”

By Jake Johnson

A former venture capitalist whose Senate campaign and push to become Republican nominee Donald Trump’s running mate were propelled by billionaire cash postured as an ally of the U.S. working class during his speech Wednesday night at the GOP’s convention, where he accepted the party’s vice presidential nomination.

“We’re done, ladies and gentlemen, catering to Wall Street. We’ll commit to the working man,” said Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who made millions working in Silicon Valley—including for billionaire Peter Thiel’s company Mithril Capital—and later started his own venture capital firm, Narya.

“We need a leader who’s not in the pocket of big business, but answers to the working man, union and nonunion alike,” said Vance (R-Ohio), an opponent of landmark legislation that would strengthen workers’ organizing rights and a leading advocate of an ostensibly pro-labor bill that—as one analyst put it—would empower corporations “to fend off union organizing drives by setting up their own internal labor organizations, AKA company unions.”
