LONDON, February 17. /TASS/. American officials are suggesting that non-European countries such as Brazil or China send their servicemen to the so-called peacekeeping force in Ukraine after the conflict ends, The Economist reported.
According to the report, Washington believes peace in Ukraine would be better if not only Western troops were present along a ceasefire line. France proposed a European deployment that would remain well behind the front lines, without necessarily committing itself to join any future fight with Russia, but reassuring Ukraine, the Economist said.
The newspaper reported that US Vice President JD Vance had told allies at the Munich Security Conference that a contingent of solely European military personnel would be less effective in deterring Russia. NATO allies looked at a deployment of so-called peacekeepers at a meeting at Ramstein Air Base in January, and it became apparent then that European land forces would be stretched dangerously thin, creating gaps in NATO’s own defensive lines, according to the Economist.
Besides, some Western officials worried that a “peacekeeping force” in Ukraine could put allies before a dilemma, the report said. Faced with Russia’s potential military operations, any European deployment in Ukraine would then be forced to choose between watching passively or actively confronting Moscow in response.
