Ithaca passes rent cancellation resolution

— As tenant activists push for statewide rent relief, the city of Ithaca is looking to enact its own rent cancellation measure. A resolution approved last week by the Common Council, and supported by the city’s mayor, would have Ithaca formally seek permission from the state to cancel three months of rent payments.
— Former Deputy Mayor for Housing Alicia Glen is launching her own real estate firm focused on building affordable rental housing in smaller cities across the country.
— New York University is reportedly considering leasing hotel rooms to house students during the upcoming academic year, in order to allow more space for social distancing.

City of Ithaca Common Council asks state to allow rent cancellation

he City of Ithaca Common Council voted on Wednesday to send a request to the state granting the Mayor Svante Myrick the authority to cancel three months of rent due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic fallout it has caused.
With unemployment in Tompkins County skyrocketing to more than 10% since ‘NYS on PAUSE’ was introduced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in March, renters — which comprise more than 70% of Ithaca’s residents — have been pushing for some sort of relief to mounting debt some are accruing with their landlords. The governor issued an executive order suspending evictions and further extended that through August, but with fewer protections for tenants. Wednesday they scored their first victory in what promises to be a long fight.
