Up to 43° C as another prolonged heatwave hits Greece

In the grip of another prolonged heatwave is Greece with temperatures forecast to reach up to 43 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country today and tomorrow, July 17-18, 2024.

Forecast are grim as the heatwave is expected to last more days and temperature may return to seasonal average around the end of the month.

Meteorologists warn that extreme high temperatures will continue to plague Greeks until the end of the month and speak of a “record” heatwave regarding its duration.

In a post on social media, the director of the National Meteorological Service EMY, Thodoris Kolydas, noted that, according to the forecast data available so far, it seems that the heatwave will last until July 26-27.

On his part, meteorologist, Klearchos Marousakis stressed that the heatwave is peaking with temperatures that will reach up to 43 degrees today, Wednesday, and tomorrow, Thursday.

Most affected are the areas located in the West and the North of the country as “there the warm air masses expand with greater intensity.”

Extremely high temperatures will prevail specifically in areas such as

  • western Sterea
  • western, southern and eastern Peloponnese i.e. Pyrgos Ilias, Messinia, Laconia, Argolida, Leonidio, Astros Kynourias.

In Attica, temperature will reach up to 39 degrees Celsius in the center of Athens, while the north winds (meltemi) persists.

In Thessaloniki, the mercury will reach close to 37° C.

At the same time, high temperatures of up to 43° C are expected on Thursday in closed areas, far from the sea.

The northern winds will persist, especially in the eastern parts of the Aegean Sea with 6 to 7 Beaufort, thus increasing the risk of wildfires
