Trump’s sanctions threats against Russia usual routine – Kremlin

MOSCOW, January 23. /TASS/. The Kremlin views US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose sanctions against Russia if a deal on the Ukrainian conflict settlement is not reached as the usual routine, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

“We do not see any particularly new elements here,” he said. “You know that Trump, during his first term, was the US president who resorted to methods of sanctions too often.”

US President Trump announced earlier in the month that he would impose new tariffs and sanctions on Russian exports if the conflict in Ukraine was not resolved soon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated in January that Moscow was open to dialogue on the Ukrainian conflict resolution with the new US administration, but that the priority should be to address the root causes of the crisis.

He confirmed that Russia was taking note of statements by Trump and his team members about their willingness to restore contact and the need to do everything possible to prevent World War III.

Kremlin questions Trump’s estimate of Soviet losses in WWII

MOSCOW, January 23. /TASS/. The number cited by US President Donald Trump when discussing Soviet losses during the Second World War differs significantly from estimates provided by Russian historians and specialists across the continent, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated in response to a TASS reporter’s inquiry.

“We consider this figure to be inconsistent with the data available to us and to historians across the continent. Experts specializing in WWII are well aware of the magnitude of the death toll,” Peskov emphasized.

Trump stated on Wednesday that Russia helped the United States “win the Second World War, losing almost 60,000,000 lives in the process.” He also said that he always had “a very good relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin and that he loves the Russian people.

The Soviet Union sustained the heaviest losses in WWII. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, irretrievable Soviet losses totaled 26.6 million people, including around 18 million civilians and approximately 8.7 million troops. Of the latter number, 1 million Soviet soldiers sacrificed their lives to liberate European peoples.

Russia needs to look at Trump’s proposals on Ukraine first — diplomat

LONDON, January 22. /TASS/. Moscow needs to see what exactly US President Donald Trump’s proposed deal on Ukraine is, Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky has told Reuters.

“It’s not merely the question of ending the war,” Polyansky said. “It’s first and foremost the question of addressing root causes of Ukrainian crisis.”

“So we have to see what does the ‘deal’ mean in President Trump’s understanding. He is not responsible for what the US has been doing in Ukraine since 2014, making it ‘anti-Russia’ and preparing for the war with us, but it is in his power now to stop this malicious policy,” the Russian diplomat added.

Trump said earlier on Wednesday that his administration would impose new tariffs and sanctions on Russian exports if the conflict in Ukraine is not settled promptly. Besides, the US president said he was ready to do “a very big favor” to the Russian side, calling upon Russia “to make a deal.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Moscow was open to dialogue on the Ukraine conflict with the new US administration, with the priority being to address the root causes of the crisis. He confirmed that Russia was taking note of statements by Trump and his team members about their willingness to restore contact and the need to do everything possible to prevent World War III.

Trump Threatens Russia With More Sanctions If Putin Doesn’t Make a Deal To End Ukraine War

Jan 22 2025

On Wednesday, President Trump called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a deal to end the war in Ukraine and threatened that if it doesn’t come to an end, he will place additional tariffs and sanctions on Russian goods.

“I’m not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people, and always had a very good relationship with President Putin – and this despite the Radical Left’s Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX. We must never forget that Russia helped us win the Second World War, losing almost 60,000,000 lives in the process,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“All of that being said, I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR. Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.” the president added.

Trump said no more lives should be lost in the war and said a deal could be done “the easy way, or the hard way.”

US sanctions on Russia that were imposed under President Biden did nothing to stop the war in Ukraine and did not destroy the Russian economy as the Biden administration had hoped. It’s unclear if there are any additional sanctions Trump could impose on Russia that would make any difference.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that it is the policy of the administration to bring the war to a close, and The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Trump had instructed his envoy to the Ukraine war, Keith Kellog, to reach a settlement in 100 days, but it remains unclear what sort of deal the US might offer Russia.
