Syria – Turks Attack Afrin, U.S. Strategy Fails, Kurds Again Chose The Losing Side

After negotiations between Russia/Syria and the Kurds of Afrin had failed, the Russian side made a deal with Turkey. Now Turkey attacks Afrin while everyone else looks aside. The main impetus for this development was the announcement of a U.S. occupation in north-east Syria with the help of the Kurdish YPG/PKK. The occupation strategy is already failing. The Kurds made the false choice. They will be the losers of this game.

Seit Jahren wird die „Revolution in Rojava“, dem nördlichen Teil Syriens an der türkischen Grenze, von libertären bis hin zu maoistischen Teilen der radikalen Linken gehypt. Die „Autonomie“ wird gelobt, die Befreiung der Frau und der Kampf gegen den islamischen Staat. Solidarität bis hin zur Teilnahme am bewaffneten Kampf war angesagt, insbesondere nach dem siegreichen Kampf um Kobane gegen die Terroristen vom islamischen Staat. Rojava stand und steht für sie nicht nur für die Perspektive eines eigenen kurdischen Staates sondern für diejenige eines Fokus der internationalen sozialen Revolution gegen den Imperialismus.

It’s a cruel saga, and one that promises no immediate end. Turkey, considered one of the more potent of powers within the NATO alliance, has manoeuvred itself into a play that Washington will find hard to avoid. For Ankara, one thing must not happen as Islamic State forces gradually vanish, or more likely metamorphose into the next force they will, in time, become. It is that inconvenient matter of the Kurds, ever present, and, in recent few years ever forceful, about carving out territory within Syria and Iraq.
The United States has seen the Kurds as something of a gem, desperate, keen to fight, and often effective in their encounters with the Islamic State forces and their various incarnations. Ankara has been none too pleased with that fact. Guns, once acquired, are used; weapons, once used, are hard to put down.
