The whole western press is now full of articles about the possibility of a major war in the centre of Europe, directly between Russia and Ukraine which, by its very nature, will be a conflict between NATO on the one hand, Russia and its ally Belarus on the other. A conflict which will begin as an indirect one but can easily become a direct one.
Μajor Western media, such as the BBC and The Washington Post, τhe New York Times οr Le Monde, are now full of lies and misinformation about Ukraine and Russia, just as they were before the bombing of Yugoslavia, the invasion of Iraq, the intervention and destruction of Libya, the intervention in Syria, even the political and financial attack and destruction of Greece. They keep inversing the truth as much as they can, as they were doing last summer when they were presenting the demolition of Gaza as an application of the Israeli right to self-defense.
They repeat one thousand times a day that 100.000 Russian soldiers are gathering near the Russian border with Ukraine which proves that Russia is going to invade Ukraine. (The fact the Director of CIA and the Pentagon are saying they are not sure about Russian intentions is rarely mentioned by the western press, whose owners are more hawkish than the US secret services!). No western reader or TV viewer will learn that Russia and the Republic of Lugansk are also accusing Zelensky of gathering 100 to 150.000 troops and paramilitaries with the purpose of invading Donbass and Lugansk, threatening to slaughter their predominantly Russian inhabitants. Maybe those accusations are completely wrong. But western citizens do not have the right to hear the arguments of both sides and judge for themselves? Western “journalists” should not investigate what both sides are claiming, instead of providing us with stories made by CIA or MI6?
By the way, this is also a probable explanation of the reason Kremlin has gathered its troops near the border with Ukraine. Probably, it wants to deter an invasion of Donbass and Lugansk Republics by the forces of Zelensky and his neo-Nazi friends which could lead to a massacre of the Russian population of the two Republics. No Russian President can afford the slaughter of his compatriots and Putin is no exception.
Maybe some readers will think we are exaggerating the situation by speaking of the possibility of slaughtering of Russians by the Ukrainian Army and its paramilitary allies. They are right to put questions. Because they hear and read, every day, about those 100.000 Russian soldiers, but they never (or very rarely) hear of the crimes of the Neo-Nazi Azov Battalion and other Ukrainian Far Right groups armed and trained by the US, Canada, the UK, France and Netanyahu’s Israel (for example https://www.jpost.com/
Western readers are informed by their televisions and newspapers about those threatening concentrations of Russian troops inside Russia. But nobody in the western press is putting the question why we had last summer the Sea Breeze exercise (planned under Trump’s administration and executed under Biden – under Trump we had also an upgrading of the Ukraine – NATO relation), probably the most important and most massive drills in the whole history of NATO, in the context of which an enormous amount of forces from 30 countries has encircled Russia from the Black Sea to Central Europe, while NATO forces were pressing also Russia from Poland, the Baltics and the Barents Sea. What is NATO doing in the Russian perimeter. Why all this is not a preparation for invading Russia? How Russian generals have to understand all that but as a threat of a general war against their country? Is NATO playing some sort of Play Mobil game for children?
A Western reader does not get from his media outlets any historical explanation of the events unfolding in Ukraine, except for the evil character of Putin’s Russia. No mentioning of the undemocratic way the USSR was dissolved, against the will of its population, as expressed in the March 1991 referendum and with no respect of the right of Nations to Self – Determination (The Ukraine: The USA is responsible for the escalation and must stop it before provoking a world war | Defend Democracy Press). No mentioning of the horrible social and demographic disaster unfold upon this huge European country, in the hands of a criminal, mafiozi Oligarchy supported by the West.
From the way western media are covering the crisis in Ukraine we cannot learn much about Ukraine, but we can learn a lot on the enormous progress totalitarianism has done in our societies, including in controlling information. Nowadays, it would be impossible to publish articles about the Mỹ Lai massacre in Vietnam or Watergate.
We should notice that since at least two decades nobody can easily put in doubt the foreign policy of the European states and criticize in particular their policy towards Russia or Israel. A climate on Neo-McCarthyism is reigning above Europe. Those who dare to put in doubt the rational of the new Cold War or criticize Israel or speak of its enormous role in European affairs are called “pro-Putin and pro-Russian”, if not Russian agents and/or anti-Semite and cosnpirationists, they are ostracized from the public sphere and they are obliged to apologize for the rest of their life. Even personalities like Ken Loach, Jeremy Corbyn, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Mikis Theodorakis, Alexis Tsipras (before his capitulation), Ken Livingstone and many others were treated that way. In a 2006 report, the “European Council of Foreign Affairs”, a pro-Soros, anti-Russian and Cold War structure attacked in a report two members of the EU, Greece and Cyprus, as being the Russian “Troian Horses” inside the European Union, because of the fact they cultivated quite close relations with Russia. Probably those accusations were not unrelated to the financial attacks to both countries some years later.
More important than the lies and the disinformation prestigious Western mass media are diffusing are their omissions. A military conflict between Russia and Ukraine will be, at least, in an indirect way, a conflict between NATO and Russia and its ally Belarus. But Russia is not Yugoslavia, Iraq or Libya. It is a nuclear power able to destroy life on earth in half an hour. No mention of that small detail in the reporting, because if this “detail” would be mentioned, the whole basis of the debate would shift abruptly.
By the way, if tomorrow we have an extremist administration in Washington, by people like Trump, Bolton, the Christian Zionist Pence, Pompeo etc. or the likes, which is not a so improbable scenario, we cannot exclude they will favor a limited nuclear exchange which can destroy Ukraine, Southern Russia, a part of Belarus, some of the neighboring regions and states and probably the Balkans. After all both World Wars were operations where Europe was destroyed and America has prevailed over it.
An indirect conflict can become a direct conflict and such a direct conflict between NATO and Russia, will become most probably a nuclear conflict. A nuclear war between Russia and NATO will at best destroy a large part of Europe, at worse the whole mankind. But there is not any discussion in the press about the probability of such scenarios. All reporting tends to install to the people the stupid idea that this is a story affecting only Russians and Ukrainians, not the future and even the survival of Europe or, probably, the mankind. The whole reporting is like a war film on bad Russians and poor, good Ukrainians, a war which will not affect the viewers. The purpose of this gigantic operation is to keep the western public calm.
Even without mentioning nuclear arms, only cutting the energy flows from Russia to Europe would be enough to provoke an enormous crisis.
Even if the worse does not come, the continuation of a war by proxies between NATO and Russia in the center of Europe will have terrible consequences to Europe, it will deny to it any means of even a rudimentary sovereignty and independence and it will remain a wound at the heart of Europe, ready to be used in all sorts of provocations.
In our next article we will examine how European political forces are reacting to all that and the need for a new “Zimmerwald Conference”
