Omicron variant concerns rattle oil prices and global markets

Oil prices and global stock markets fell on Friday amid concerns the new Omicron Covid-19 variant discovered in South Africa could dampen economic growth and hit fuel demand.
Brent, the global benchmark for two-thirds of the world’s oil, slid 11.55 per cent to $72.72 per barrel when markets closed on Friday, while the US crude gauge West Texas Intermediate dropped 13.06 per cent to $68.15 per barrel, the largest one-day decline since April 2020.
“A new Covid-19 variant has put crude oil prices under heavy selling pressure on Friday, with prices falling to a 3-month low,” Giovanni Staunovo, strategist at UBS, said in a note. “Lower market liquidity post the Thanksgiving holiday in the US has also likely exaggerated the move.”

Don’t panic, wait and watch: WHO on ‘Omicron’ variant

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday classified the new coronavirus variant detected in South Africa as a “variant of concern”, naming it Omicron. The announcement came late on Friday after a closed-door meeting of experts from WHO gathered to assess the variant.
Earlier in the day, WHO had urged countries not to panic and cautioned against “hasty measures”, even as a slew of nations across the world reacted with alarm to the news.

New Omicron variant not a disaster, says Sage scientist

The Omicron coronavirus variant is “not a disaster” and some people may be “hugely overstating the situation”, a scientist advising the government says.
Omicron has been labelled “of concern” by the World Health Organization, and is causing alarm among some scientists.But microbiologist Prof Calum Semple says vaccines are “still likely to protect you from severe disease”.
Prof Semple does, however, support the new UK travel restrictions, saying they will allow more people to get jabbed.

Information released about Ómicron is exaggerated: Hugo López-Gatell points out lack of scientific evidence

Mexico.- Hugo Lopez-Gatell stated that the Information disseminated about Omicrón is exaggerated, as it indicates that there is insufficient scientific evidence to make claims about lethality and transmissibility.
Through his official Twitter account, Hugo López-Gatell affirmed on November 27, 2021, that the Omicron variant of Covid-19, it is the most recent and that has generated concern, however, it shows the lack of scientific studies.
