Israeli extermination plan underway in northern Gaza

Dozens of people were killed in Beit Lahiya on Saturday as Israeli warplanes razed entire residential blocks just days after the UN warned that tens of thousands of Palestinians are ā€œin grave dangerā€ in northern Gaza.

Reality for Palestinians throughout Gaza, where more than 43,000 people have been killed since last October, with thousands more dead and uncounted under the rubble, is becoming more brutal by the day.

ā€œSupplies essential for people’s survival and humanitarian assistance are blocked at every turn,ā€ a senior UN official told the Security Council this week.

Joyce Msuya, the acting UN relief chief, added on Wednesday that the Security Council and all UN member states ā€œmust exert all their influenceā€ to ensure the respect of international humanitarian law.

ā€œThe atrocities in Gaza must end, but this cannot happen through words; it must happen through action – urgent, unequivocal action,ā€ she added.

Three prominent Palestinian human rights groups – Al-Haq, Al Mezan and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights – said this week that civilians in northern Gaza are ā€œare being punished for continuing to refuse to follow Israel’s unlawful forcible displacement orders.ā€

With no safe place to go, Palestinians in Gaza’s north are fearful that if they flee, they will never be able to return.

Israel’s plan to resettle Gaza by illegally transferring its own civilian population to and annexing the north ā€œis becoming clearer with every day that passes,ā€ the Palestinian human rights groups said.

Demonstrating that point, several Israeli lawmakers from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party plan to participate in a conference titled ā€œPreparing to Resettle Gazaā€ to be held on Monday.

Palestinians who are trying to flee from Jabaliya, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza, or are moving around in search of food or safety, ā€œare being shot at and killed by Israeli snipers, quadcopters and drones,ā€ the rights groups said.

As Israel’s siege on north Gaza continues, how are people coping?

ByĀ

Israel attacked Beit Lahiya on Saturday, hitting residential buildings. At least 87 people have been killed or missing, according to the Government Media Office.

Israel laid siege to north Gaza more than two weeks ago and has been attacking everyone left in the area ferociously since, resulting in the deaths of many civilians.

Here is what you need to know about Israel’s ongoing assault in north Gaza:

What is Israel doing to north Gaza?

Israel launched the assault in northern Gaza on October 6, claiming it aimed to stop Hamas from regrouping.

The Israeli army’s Arabic spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, said Hamas had established ā€œterrorist infrastructure in your region, exploiting the population, shelters, and health facilities as a human shieldā€.

Israel demanded the evacuation of civilians from large swaths, including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoon, calling on residents to flee south, including to the already overcrowded ā€œhumanitarian zoneā€ in al-Mawasi.

Israel has attacked humanitarian zones several times, prompting the United Nations to say repeatedly that no place in the enclave is safe.

ā€œWe feel like we’re bodies without souls. The bombardment was intense and merciless around our house, disregarding the presence of children and women inside,ā€ one northern Gaza resident told Al Jazeera. ā€œBodies are left in the streets. They’ve become food for dogs.ā€
