A new wave of brain drain is broiling as Greece’s youth does not want to stay in the country and 77.1% of them is ready to migrate, a recent public opinion poll has found. And it’s not only the youth, at least in the intention to relocate abroad for better working and income conditions.
According to a survey conducted by March on behalf of diANEOsis, the vast majority of Greeks would emigrate abroad if they found better working conditions in another country.
Young people are more likely to want to immigrate: 77.1% of 17-24 year olds say they would emigrate abroad if they found a better-paying job.
The percentage is also with 71.9% extremely high at productive ages 25-39.
In the total population 57.9% of Greeks say they would go abroad if they found a job with better pay and better conditions.
The detailed data of the diANEOsis research show the following:
57.9% of Greeks stated that they would emigrate abroad if they found a job with better pay and better conditions. The relevant question is answered “definitely YES” by 38.1% and “Probably YES” by 19.8%. NO and probably NO, answered 41.3% of respondents.
77.1% of young people aged 17-24 answered that they would immigrate abroad. 44.4% answer “definitely YES” and 32.7% “Probably YES”. No and probably not only 21.6% of respondents answer.
71.9% of people aged 25-39, state that they would immigrate abroad. 36.9% answer “definitely YES” and 35.0% “Probably YES”. No and probably not, answered 26.9% of respondents.
52.5% of people aged 40-54 answer that they would immigrate abroad. 33.2% answer “definitely YES” and 19.3% “Probably YES”. No, and probably no, 46.7% of the respondents answered no.
54.3% of people aged 55-64 answer that they would immigrate abroad. 42.9% answer “definitely YES” and 11.4% “Probably YES”. No, and probably no, 45.7% of the respondents answered no.
44.9% of people aged 65 and over also say they would emigrate abroad for better working conditions. 39.2% answer “definitely YES” and 5.7% “Probably YES”. No and probably not answered 54.7% of respondents.
The conclusions are published in the second part of the DIANEOsis survey, entitled “What the Greeks believe 2022”. The survey was conducted by the research company MARC A.E., on a representative sample of the general population aged 17 and over (1,254 people), with telephone interviews and online panel between January 26 – February 5, 2022.
