Greece tells MEPs: Migration on islands “explosive, beyond manageable capacity”

November 6, 2019

Greek Minister for Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, described with the grimiest colors the situation of the migration problem is Greece. The problem on the islands is “explosive and beyond any manageable capacity,” Chrysochoidis told the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament on Wednesday.

“Even if the entire EU mechanism is mobilized” it would not be able to manage this “tsunami of people,” the minister in charge of Migration stressed.

He underlined that “doctors or asylum officers are faced with hundreds of arrivals every day and , of course not being able to respond.”

He added “it is impossible to have a humanitarian treaty at these rates. It is a humanitarian catastrophe and a social disaster.”

He called on other European countries to take action to tackle the increased migration flows, in particular,  the issue of unaccompanied minors.

He said that he wrote on his EU colleagues asking other EU countries to voluntarily accept unaccompanied minors, but only one country responded positive.

He stressed that the issue of migration could not be a “problem or threat” only for the first-line countries, and described as “utopia” the belief of some countries that closing their borders was “safe” and would not allow immigrants to enter.

The Minister unfolded the Greek government program on asylum, islands de-congestion, deportations and integration of those granted asylum within the Greek society. “Education for children, jobs for their parents, ensuring rights and responsibilities.”

PS Grim present vs rosy future under control. How is this possible? Only the Greek government knows…

I would love to know what the Committee told Chrysochoidis and if there were any points of criticism towards Greece in dealing with the issue. Unfortunately, we haven”t read anything about it on the local media.
