FIREBRAND Jean-Luc Mélenchon is seen as the “most convincing” French presidential candidate, a Viavoice opinion poll for the left-wing daily Libération published on Sunday has declared.

The hardline left-winger was picked out by more than half of French voters – 51 per cent – and is more than 10 percentage points ahead of independent centrist Emmanuel Macron, the current presidential favourite, who was seen as the most convincing Elysée hopeful by some 38 per cent of voters.Right-wing candidate Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s anti-EU Front National party, was named the most convincing by 28 per cent of voters, ahead of right-winger François Fillon, who scored 22 per cent.
