France donated to Greece the magnificent tapestry depicting the artwork of Italian-born High Renaissance artist Raphael.
Raphael’s famous, dubbed the School of Athens, is famous across the world and France’s donation is part of commemorations of the Bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence.
The artwork shows all the great thinkers from ancient Greece and the priceless tapestry, a reproduction of the original painting, has been hung behind French lawmakers since 1879.
After extensive restoration, the tapestry was revealed in all its splendour in September 2020 during a French Parliament’s plenary session
As My Modern Met outlines, “Raphael’s fresco The School of Athens has come to symbolise the marriage of art, philosophy, and science that was a hallmark of the Italian Renaissance.”
