EU must choose between Ukraine or Russian gas – UK PM Johnson

The nations of Western Europe will soon have to decide whether they want to buy cheap Russian gas, or defend Ukraine against Moscow, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has claimed as tensions mount in the east of the continent.
Speaking at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet on Monday, Johnson remarked “we hope that our friends may recognize that a choice is shortly coming between mainlining ever more Russian hydrocarbons in giant new pipelines and sticking up for Ukraine and championing the cause of peace and stability.” The UK and much of the EU has faced a worsening gas crisis in recent weeks, with prices shooting up by as much as 250% in some places.
Johnson also weighed in on the humanitarian crisis hitting the continent’s east, claiming Downing Street had been “quick to respond” when the UK’s “Polish friends” asked for help with the situation on their border with Belarus, which has seen a sharp spike in refugees attempting to cross into the EU illegally. Britain has deployed a contingent of engineers to help reinforce the border fence.

Ukraine tells EU leaders: Prepare for war with Russia

Paris and Berlin must brace themselves for an outbreak of fighting between Russia and Ukraine, Kiev’s foreign minister has warned amid unsubstantiated rumors that Moscow is building up its military forces at the shared border.
Dmitry Kuleba sounded the alarm on Monday during a meeting with his Western counterparts, saying that the West would have to avoid being tied up in bureaucracy in the event of a conflict. “If Russia starts acting, you simply won’t have time physically to coordinate, to go through all the bureaucratic procedures, to coordinate decisions,” he said.
“So please do the preparatory work now, because if the military scenario happens, there will simply be no time,” he urged his French and German counterparts, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Heiko Maas.

I was writing an article commenting on the recent Biden – Putin meeting in Geneva, which I consider a first – even if it remains very fragile – victory in the struggle of humanity to confront the terrible threats to its own existence, when I heard the news about the incident between the British and the Russian Navy in the Black Sea.
Things are moving so quickly these days you don’t have the time to write about one event before some new episode comes.
Russia has announced it has used live ammunition to drive a British warship out of its territorial waters in the Black Sea. The incident took place on the eve of the giant Sea Breeze exercises of Ukraine and NATO in the Black Sea.
