Between Colonial Vision and Palestinian Reality

by Mawan Emil Toubassi (*)

It is evident that Trump’s policy is characterized by aggressive realism, relying on chaos as a tool to reshape the world. This approach carries immense risks, as absolute chaos can lead to unforeseen consequences, including the loss of control over the global scene, the collapse of traditional alliances on which the United States depends, and various international balances.

With the current discussions about a proposed congressional resolution to withdraw from the United Nations—an indication of an isolated state above global consensus and promoting chaos and American hegemony—President Donald Trump has made statements revealing his true vision for the Palestinian issue. In his latest interview with Fox News yesterday, he expressed astonishment at Gaza’s situation and its natural beauty, questioning how Israel had left it, subtly implying the necessity of regaining full control over it. Moreover, he affirmed that his plan for rebuilding the region includes “beautiful communities” for Palestinians—aligning with Israel’s long-standing forced displacement policies under the guise of voluntary relocation and Trump’s theory of chaotic realism.

These statements are closely linked to Israel’s systematic actions in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprise visit to Tulkarm yesterday, accompanied by senior military officials of the Israeli occupation forces, in an aggressive move that blatantly violates international agreements, as has been the norm. This visit was not just a political show but was part of a broader strategy to undermine and even dismantle the Palestinian National Authority, which, according to their vision, has outlived its purpose. From our perspective, the Authority was supposed to be a transitional phase toward statehood—something that was never clearly outlined in the Oslo Accords and was never permitted under the unipolar international order. Meanwhile, Israel continues its relentless escalation, exerting military oppression and economic pressure to drive Palestinians off their land under the weight of terror and systematic restrictions.

In this context, President Mahmoud Abbas announced during a meeting of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council that a peace conference would be held in Washington at the end of June. This raises serious questions about the credibility and feasibility of such American initiatives amid ongoing Israeli escalations and blatant U.S. complicity. Just yesterday, Whitekov met with American real estate developers to discuss Gaza’s reconstruction according to the American vision. While talks of negotiations in Gaza and a peace conference in Washington persist, Israel continues imposing new realities on the ground through annexation, settlement expansion, military aggression, and ongoing genocide and displacement—all aimed at realizing the vision of Greater Israel. This contradiction reveals the true nature of American policies, which publicly advocate peace while granting Israel a free hand to advance its colonial agenda.

What we are witnessing today is not merely passing political stances but the concrete execution of colonial projects designed to restructure the Palestinian landscape according to an Israeli-American imperialist vision. Trump’s rhetoric about “improving Palestinians’ lives” is nothing more than an attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause through economic solutions and “deals” that circumvent our political and sovereign rights. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s moves in Tulkarm are part of a larger plan to tighten Israeli control over the West Bank and advance de facto annexation under the guise of “security and counterterrorism.”

Given this reality, it is imperative to confront these threats with wisdom and strategic clarity by strengthening broad national unity and activating political and diplomatic efforts to expose these schemes while ensuring the protection and empowerment of our people to sustain popular resistance. Today’s battle is not only over land but also over historical narrative, legitimacy, and international recognition. The more attempts are made to erase the Palestinian cause, the louder we must proclaim that Palestine is not for sale, and its people will not accept any settlement imposed by occupation, political money, or security arrangements. However, this must not remain a mere slogan, as it was prominently raised in the latest Fatah Revolutionary Council meeting, despite its importance. It must be accompanied by concrete measures, including reassessing relations with Israel and the United States while repositioning Palestinian political alliances internationally in ways that serve our national cause and unified representation.

Moreover, Arab states must adopt more independent and politically resolute positions to counter American pressures in the upcoming summit in Cairo—especially after yesterday’s unofficial mini-summit in Riyadh, which notably lacked Palestinian representation. Strategic alliances must be formed to strengthen the Palestinian stance and reinforce national unity options in the face of hegemony, settlement expansion, and displacement projects.

Therefore, in my view, given the prevailing Israeli vision and the direct U.S. interventions I have mentioned, it is likely that the West Bank will undergo significant transformations aimed at undermining and even dismantling the Palestinian National Authority. This could lead to the formation of “renewed” service-based administrations under Israeli-American security oversight, diverging from the national liberation vision, while implementing the planned arrangements for Gaza. These developments will become clearer following the anticipated Arab summit next week, which will reveal whether there is a genuine will to forge an independent Arab vision or a renewed tendency toward dependency and normalization—falling in line with Trump’s aggressive realist approach that relies on imposing deals on nations or co-opting them.

Lastly, I extend my congratulations to the freed Palestinian prisoners and my best wishes for those still enduring the horrors of Israeli occupation prisons, hoping for their imminent liberation
