The Israeli military announced on Thursday that it killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
Sinwar was reportedly killed on Wednesday by ground troops who did not realize they were engaged with Israel’s most-wanted man, apparently having no prior intelligence of his location.
Israel’s police claimed that “dental records and fingerprints have allowed definitive identification of Sinwar’s remains,” Reuters reported.
Graphic images and videos purportedly showing Sinwar’s body were published by Israeli media.
On Friday, Hamas confirmed the death of Sinwar, widely viewed as the mastermind of the 7 October 2023 surprise attack that devastated the Israeli army’s southern command and forever shattered the myth of Israeli military invincibility.
In an announcement delivered by Khalil al-Hayya, head of Hamas in Gaza, the resistance group said that Sinwar “dedicated his life for Palestine, and sacrificed his soul for the sake of God on the path to its liberation.”

The Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas announced on Friday the martyrdom of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas’ political bureau, “who sought martyrdom and attained it after clashing with a zionist force alongside other fighters in the Gaza Strip”.
Israel said on October 16 that it had killed Sinwar during an intense confrontation in the Tel Al-Sultan area, Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, on Wednesday, October 16.

Yahya Sinwar died fighting Israel. His death will not defeat Hamas

The early pictures posted on social media of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar lying dead inside what seems to be a partially demolished house in Gaza may not have been what the Israeli leaders wanted the world to see.
It has been suggested that the soldiers who found the dead body and suspected it was of Sinwar hurriedly photographed him and sent the pictures to some acquaintances who in turn posted them for the world to see.
Their superiors had in mind a different narrative as to how the man died.
They would have preferred to draw a picture of a Hamas leader hiding in a tunnel using Israeli hostages as human shields. The truth is that Hamas’ top leader lost his life fighting his enemies.

Israel announced Thursday it had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, releasing a video allegedly showing Sinwar’s final moments before his death after Israeli forces in Rafah attacked the building he was in. After the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared “this is not the end of the war in Gaza.” In Tel Aviv, Israeli families called for Netanyahu to refocus efforts on negotiating a deal to free the hostages. “They are torn because they are clever enough to understand that the killing of Sinwar does not mean the release of their loved ones,” says Gideon Levy, award-winning Israeli journalist and author, who says Netanyahu will continue to act through sheer force as he sets his sights on Iran with the full support of the United States.
