“I am just happy. The people at the university are extremely generous, very kind. The films we make are the result of a collective work and therefore this distinction belongs not only to me but to all the people who work for our films “. This was stated, among other things, in APE-MPE by Ken Loach, one of the most famous British directors shortly after he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Department of Social Work of the University of West Attica.
Ken Loach, who has twice been honored with the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, also spoke about Greece’s constant request for the return of the Parthenon sculptures. “The Sculptures have been stolen. Of course, they must return to Greece and the Greek people. It is a central point of your story “, said the director of the famous film” Earth and Freedom “to APE-MPE.
He clarified, however, that the powerful of his country are very different from its people. “The British people are more honest. He recognizes that the Sculptures have been stolen and that they must return to Greece “. That is why, as he underlined, “please do not confuse the actions of the rich and powerful with the people of everyday life”. Finally, he did not hesitate to turn against the British government, saying that it was a shame that he had not returned them yet.
At the event that took place at the Greek Embassy in London, the Greek Ambassador of Greece to the United Kingdom, Ioannis Raptakis, also received an honorary distinction. “For his efforts, for his actions and everything he has done for the university but also for Hellenism in England”, as stated the public relations manager of the university Panagiotis Douros, who handed him the relevant commemorative plaque on behalf of his rector University of West Attica, Panagiotis Kaldi.
