Russia reveals what Putin asked of Biden

In a “frank and businesslike” conversation Russian President Vladimir Putin asked his US counterpart Joe Biden for guarantees that NATO won’t expand further east or deploy offensive weapons to countries like Ukraine.
Moscow is “seriously interested” in obtaining “reliable and firm legal guarantees” excluding NATO’s further expansion eastward and deployment of “offensive strike weapons systems in countries adjacent to Russia,” the Kremlin said in a readout of Tuesday’s call between the two leaders.

The video summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden was dominated by the topic of Ukraine, but touched on other important issues dogging the relationship between Washington and Moscow.

The two-hour conference call on Tuesday also addressed cybersecurity and ransomware in particular, as well as the ongoing crisis in diplomatic relations between the US and Russia, arms control negotiations, and attempts to restart the Iran nuclear deal that Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, repudiated in 2018.

Biden and Putin make little apparent headway on Ukraine in virtual summit

Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin held a virtual summit on Tuesday but made little apparent headway in defusing the crisis over Ukraine in the wake of a Russian troop buildup, and instead delegated officials from both countries to stay in contact.
The two leaders talked by videoconference for just over two hours, during which they laid out their positions.
“The discussion between President Biden and President Putin was direct and straightforward. There was a lot of give and take, there was no finger-wagging. But the president was crystal clear about where the United States stands on all of these issues,” the US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said.

Ukraine Shows Off US Military Hardware on Army Day, Vows to Fight Off Russia

On Monday, Ukraine marked its national army day with a display of military hardware provided by the US, including armored vehicles and patrol boats.
The display comes as tensions are soaring in the region over claims that Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine, an allegation Moscow insists is baseless. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy released a statement vowing that his country could fight off Russia.
“The servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to fulfill their most important mission – to defend the freedom and sovereignty of the state from the Russian aggressor,” Zelenskiy said. “The Ukrainian army … is confident in its strength and able to thwart any conquest plans of the enemy.”
