Sanders vs. Biden

‘We are winning progressives & young people’: Sanders NOT dropping out, eager to debate Biden even after disappointing primaries

11 Mar, 2020
The defiant Senator Bernie Sanders is staying in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, saying that his campaign is winning on issues and among younger voters even if it’s losing to Joe Biden on delegate count.
“Last night, obviously, was not a good night for our campaign, from a delegate point of view,” Sanders told reporters in Burlington, Vermont on Wednesday. He acknowledged that Biden came ahead in Mississippi, Missouri, Idaho and Michigan, but pointed out that North Dakota went to him and that he was leading the count in Washington state.

Bernie Sanders: Now More Than Ever

There’s too much at stake to let establishment Democrats lead us down the road of failure by selling Joe Biden as safe. He’s not.
By Jane McAlevey
March 11, 2020
The last time leaders of the national Democratic Party coalesced around the safe and electable candidate they gave the United States to Donald Trump. Listening to current party leaders and pundits talk about Biden versus Sanders, it’s hard to avoid feeling like we’re heading for a repeat of 2016, leading to another disaster in November (with even more serious repercussions).
I am not and never have been a Bernie Bro, but it is urgent we understand why Sanders is a far better choice than Biden in the general election—and that Sanders still has a real shot at winning the nomination. This entire race can swing back to Sanders as fast as it swung to Biden. The coronavirus underscores how fast things change, and why a universal, national health care plan is far superior to maintaining a system of for-profit private insurance that is totally unfit for global pandemics, let alone ordinary health care crises.

Biden Wins, Sanders Lags: Naomi Klein & Alicia Garza on Calls to Shut Down Primaries & Debates

March 11, 2020
Former Vice President Joe Biden scored decisive primary victories Tuesday night in the key state of Michigan, along with Missouri, Mississippi and Idaho. Sanders won North Dakota and holds a lead in Washington state, but votes are still being counted, and the races are still too close to call. While Biden is less than halfway to the delegates he would need to secure the Democratic nomination, Sanders faces a decision about whether to continue his increasingly uphill fight for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination. This comes as Biden and Sanders called off their planned campaign rallies in Cleveland on Tuesday because of concerns over the coronavirus, which continues to spread, and Trump announced a new rally. We speak with Naomi Klein, senior correspondent at The Intercept and the inaugural Gloria Steinem chair of media, culture and feminist studies at Rutgers University, and Alicia Garza, strategy and partnerships director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, principal at the Black Futures Lab and a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network.

In Michigan, Joe Biden deals a lethal blow to Bernie Sanders

March 11, 2020
IN 1987, WHILE he was mayor of Burlington, Vermont, Bernie Sanders released an album of folk songs and poetry entitled “We Shall Overcome”. The record included anthems of Americana such as “This Land Is Your Land”, as well as civil-rights ballads like “Oh Freedom”. It became popular among Mr Sanders’s supporters during the 2016 Democratic primaries, embodying his long-standing devotion to progressive ideas about race and civil rights, along with his vintage lefty beliefs about the state’s responsibility to create equality. (His singing abilities were probably less of a factor in the album’s success.)

As Biden smashes Sanders’ socialist revolution, Democrats may play a surprise hand in July to fight Trump

By Robert Bridge
March 11, 2020
The former vice president continues his winning streak, knocking Bernie Sanders almost straight out of the ring in Tuesday’s primaries. Yet the nagging question remains: what happens the next time Biden opens his mouth?
Braving the viral winds that have been sweeping the nation and globe, Democrats came out in full force to support Joe Biden, the former vice president whose wildly fluctuating performance has given political pundits whiplash of late. Coming off early victories in Mississippi and Missouri, the Biden juggernaut went on to capture Michigan, the main prize of the contest and the one Midwestern state Sanders had been expected to win. Biden also claimed Idaho, while Sanders walked away from the septuagenarian brawl with Washington and North Dakota under his belt.
In other words, not exactly the ‘Bern’ that Sanders’ campaign had been hoping for.
