Russia’s Putin seeks end to Libya conflict and talks between two sides

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he wants to see an end to the conflict in Libya and then talks between the two opposing sides to begin.
Speaking at an annual news conference in Moscow, Putin said he would discuss Libya with a Turkish delegation in Russia in the coming days. Moscow and Ankara have backed different sides in the conflict, which began in 2014.

Erdogan’s power play in Libya: What it means for the tangled conflict

Turkey may now intervene directly in Libya’s civil war after a military cooperation deal was ratified between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al Sarraj.
Any moment now, Libya’s special formula – Government versus the Parliament and the Army – could bubble up with an extra ingredient from abroad. Turkey may become the first actual foreign force to officially take part in the ongoing armed rivalry between Sarraj and his UN-recognized Government of National Accord and General Khalifa Haftar, who has the support of the Libyan National Army and the country’s Parliament, based in the eastern city of Tobruk.

Tripoli urges military aid from ‘friendly’ states as E. Libya’s forces announce 3-day deadline

Libya’s UN-recognized unity government on Friday urged five “friendly countries” to implement military deals as it seeks to repel eastern forces fighting to seize the capital.
Tripoli-based GNA head Fayez al-Sarraj sent letters to the leaders of the US, Britain, Italy, Algeria and Turkey, urging them to “activate security cooperation deals,” AFP reported.
The call came a day after the Government of National Accord (GNA) approved the activation of such a deal with Ankara, paving the way for a bigger Turkish role.
